About the Infant Department
Children transfer from the Nursery to the Infant Department in the September following their fourth birthday. From five to seven years of age, children are taught in small classes by highly qualified and experienced form teachers, ably supported by classroom assistants.
A broad based curriculum is offered with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy, but also including science, art, music, ICT, PE and project work. French is taught from the Reception class.
In the Infant department pupils are encouraged to progress according to their own ability rather than by comparison with their peers. We believe in the importance of developing a child’s strengths, giving support when required, in a stimulating and encouraging environment.
Personal, social and emotional development are given high priority in our curriculum. We aim to foster attitudes that promote respect, care, politeness and helpfulness towards others as well as developing self-esteem.
Infant pupils participate in many trips and events throughout the year – these include visits to farms, zoos, and historical places of interest. They have the opportunity to study a wide range of musical instruments and join school clubs like art and music.
