French is taught to all pupils from Reception upwards, although many pupils will have already been introduced to the language from their time in Little Brackens Nursery. We believe that the younger children are exposed to new to learn languages the more quickly they are able to progress. All pupils receive French tuition from specialist staff.

The initial emphasis is on spoken French with opportunities to compare sounds from other languages and to develop an awareness of linguistic and cultural differences.

As the children progress they start to learn to write the language. A variety of resources and methods are used at all levels to match individual learning styles and pace.

Pupils are encouraged to apply their knowledge to real life situations beyond the classroom environment. We run a residential trip to Paris in the Summer Term for older pupils.

By the end of Year 6 pupils have become very confident in using their language skills. This confidence in a foreign language is invaluable as they move on to their chosen senior schools.
